Manifesto

The total machine.

Why a studio like this exists now, and what we think about the machines. Read it out loud; that is how it was written.

the total machine226 words, 8 stanzas

A studio used to be a room of people. Now it is a room of people and a rack of machines that write code all night. We named ourselves after the whole thing.

Here is what we think.

The machines are good. About seventy percent good. They will draft the feature, scaffold the app, and write the tests you asked for. Then they will ship a race condition with total confidence.

The last thirty percent is not glamorous. It is auth that holds, a migration that runs twice without damage, a queue that drains under load, a bill you can explain. That part has always been the job. It still is.

So we run both halves as one machine. Senior engineers decide what to build and what to trust. A fleet of coding agents does the typing, in parallel, in their own branches, metered and reviewed. Nothing merges because a model said it was fine.

We do not know when the singularity arrives. We suspect anyone who says they do is selling software. We do know that this year a small company can ship what used to take a floor of engineers. That is the whole opportunity, and it belongs to the people who build carefully.

We sell shipped work. Not heads, not hours, not a logo wall.

Bring the task. We will bring the machine.

Seventy and thirty are a rule of thumb from our own work, not a measurement.

Latin, roughly "the whole machine". Machina, the stage crane, not machine. If you shorten it in conversation, Machina is fine on its own. Totalis is not.

the everyday word

The machine. The English gloss, the total machine, is the title of this page and nothing else. Read how it runs on the method page, or bring a task to the start page.

Where the name comes fromVitruvius, Lucretius, the crane
the nametwo thousand years, one word

Two thousand years ago Vitruvius defined a machine as a continuous joining of parts with the greatest power to move loads too heavy for hands, and Lucretius stretched the word to cover the whole world, one system doing everything at once.

Machina Totalis is that idea applied to building software in the age of AI: a fleet of autonomous coding agents and a small crew of senior engineers running as one machine, not a team that happens to use tools.

The agents take the first seventy percent at machine speed, in parallel, around the clock; the humans own the thirty percent that breaks in production, and the seam between the two is where the craft lives.

We do not sell heads and we do not sell hours; we sell the whole thing, shipped, and we show you the machine running while it builds.

The singularity is a date on someone else's chart; the whole machine is what you can hire on Monday.

the crane and the winchwhy rescue is the crane

Machina is the Latin for the stage crane of the Greek theatre, the rig that lowered an actor onto the boards. We take the crane and the winch. A crane is honest engineering: a load, a line, a winch, and a person on the winch. That is why the rescue offer is called the crane.
